Dialectical Behavior Therapy~Radically Open & Mindful Eating Specialists in North County San Diego
Thank you for visiting our site! At Centered Ground we provide dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and other psychological services that are supported by research, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), combining concrete strategies with Eastern philosophies, in particular, mindfulness. If you are seeking balance and freedom from suffering, we welcome you to continue reading.
Centered Ground provides adherent DBT for adolescents and adults, including radically open DBT for disorders of overcontrol, such as pervasive, persistent anxiety and mood disorders, social isolation, and restricted eating. DBT is a form of CBT that includes individual therapy, group skills training, and coaching calls through a treatment team of therapists. Coaching calls assist clients in applying what they are learning in therapy, when they are facing urges and challenging situations between sessions. Skills include distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, behaviorism, and mindfulness.
Mindfulness is about being in the present moment in a nonjudgmental way. We live our lives so much in the past and future, thinking about what has already happened and what we fear will happen, that we miss out on our actual lives, which are what is actually occurring right now. Mindfulness guides us to reconnect to our actual lives and through learning new ways of interacting with your emotions, thoughts, and others in that life, you can truly build a life worth living. Radical openness also integrates self-inquiry for personal growth and promotes flexibility and connection.
Centered Ground is the only full DBT center in North County San Diego above Del Mar and also offers a location in Bankers Hill & Hillcrest. In 2015 Centered Ground director Dr. Angela Klein became the first intensively trained provider of radically open DBT in Southern California, and the DBT-based mindful eating program is unique to Centered Ground in San Diego, offered by the author of the program, Dr. Angela Klein.
the middle path of
Dialectics refers to recognizing extremes, allowing them to exist together, and finding the middle path between them. It is about questioning rigid ways of thinking and being and letting go of judgments and assumptions. It is about finding peace within the storm, even if the storm continues to rage around you. It is a balance of acceptance and change--openness to where you and others are now in this moment and movement towards where you want to be.
start building a LIFE WORTH LIVING
We have emotions for a reason. They are trying to tell us something. Therefore, to stop suffering from them, we must listen to them and honor them, make space for them and change our relationship with them--stop fighting against them and instead address what they are trying to tell us. Then they will move on.
When we experience intense sadness and depression it is often because our life is not how we want it to be. To be free of this sadness it is absolutely essential that we thus address this and move towards building the life we want to be living--a life consistent with what we value and find fulfilling--a life worth living. This can feel overwhelming or impossible--and at Centered Ground we can work together to help you take those steps even when you feel like you just can't.

Reflections & Inspirations
Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.
Courage is not the towering oak that sees storms come and go; it is the fragile blossom that opens in the snow.
Alice Mackenzie Swaim
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
